The first big milestone in any construction project is the day you break ground. Sure, choosing an Architect, a GC and subcontractors are all big decisions, but it all seems really theoretical until the day you start to dig the hole that will be your foundation.
Our ground breaking was a family affair. We put the kids in hard hats and had them take out the first few shovels of dirt. It was all very exciting and (if I do say so myself) very cute. In a few short days, all sorts of heavy equipment would be at the site doing the real work, but for that one day it was just the kids and their shovels marking the start of our project.
